Early days
Before moving to VPS, I was using Hostmonster for my sites, which is quite good in general. In fact, this very site you are visiting is hosted by Hostmonster.
Plan
As a shared-hosting plan, it has more than enough hosting space (1,500 GB) and bandwidth (15,000 GB) at your disposal. I don't think my site will ever reach these limits (even remotely:). It also has many nice features, such as SSH access (a must have), cPanel (make web administration much easier), unlimited domain/subdomains (you are on a roll with drupal's powerful multi-site feature) and so forth.
Performance
My very first testing site (http://allthingsvoted.com) has been up for about three months and I don't recall any down time or other server issues (see an early post on one month experience for comparison). The speed is fair, of course this is a very low traffic site, which probably is not a good example.
Support
Support is satisfactory. I almost always use Live Chat instead of calling them. In most cases, my questions were answered in a timely manner.
Drupal setup
Not sure about other shared hosting providers, as a newbie of drupal, hosting, and web development, I found drupal transfer/setup on hostmonster is quite smooth. I don't recall any major hurdles except for a few small glitches during the whole process, which is completely normal when coming to something new. Several days ago I noticed that hostmonster has upgraded their Apache server from 1.3 to 2.2.6. Now the "status report" shows:

Overall, I have no complaints about Hostmonster's service and actually just signup their affiliate program to show my endorsement. I hope they keep up the good work so that no one (including myself) would wanna kill me later because of this article.
If hostmonster is so good, why would you leave it for VPS? you may ask. This old post explains it. Basically I need to run a text-to-speech program on the server, which unfortunately is not allowed with hostmonster's plan, its only plan (oh, I forgot to mention this is one of their disadvantages. I wish they have more plans such as VPS and dedicated server that allow customers growing their sites without switching providers.) So if you are considering running something like FFMpeg, Lame, look elsewhere.
I don't blame them since this is a shared hosting plan. But running a TTS program is vital for my site, which I cannot compromise. So I started to look for a VPS provider.
