For some background info, check my last post.
As usual, my first stop is google instead of drupal.org (sadly this time the route was proved to be costly). For some reason after I entered "VPS hosting" in google, a company called gate.com pops up on the first page.
It has pretty good price, 30 per month with decent numbers.
The plan also lists many features and boasts 24/7/365 technical support, which in many ways seems to be very attractive. Everything looks good, so without spending much time on research, I quickly signup. I want to transfer my locally hosted website to the server asap. It turned out I entered a wrong gate:
- insufficient technical support. You need to register their customer forum and send private message to "gatesupport". It seems they are very undermanned. Why they don't have a ticket system just like everybody else?
- drupal setup was not smooth at all. (I myself should take some blame for lacking of necessary knowledge and experience).
- phone support: $15 each call. What? My hope quickly diminished after I picked up the phone for the first time.
- only fedora core 4 available (isn't it a bit too old fashioned?), I have to install Yum, GCC etc myself.
- manually restarted vps 3 times within 2 days.
it's a "truely" unmanaged plan. I realized this is definitely not what I wanted and expected. My spare time is extremely limited, I just simply cannot afford to spending most of my time on tweaking the server and solving installation issues.
I cancelled the plan after for 4 days.
